A Rare Variation of Inferior Laryngeal Nerve: Nonrecurrent Laryngeal Nerve.
A nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve variant of the inferior laryngeal nerve is very rarely seen, and surgeons should keep it in mind during thyroid surgery. Preoperative findings, like situs invertus and dysphagia lusoria, may be suggestive of a nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve. However, these findings always have not to be together with nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve, like our case.
متن کاملNonrecurrent Laryngeal Nerve in the Era of Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring
Nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve (non-RLN) is an anatomical variation increasing the risk of vocal cord palsy. Prediction and early identification of non-RLN may minimize such a risk of injury. This study assessed the effect of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) on the detection of non-RLN. A total of 462 (236 right) nerves in 272 patients were identified and totally exposed, and all intraoperat...

The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) has many anatomical variations and various relations with adjacent structures. Identification and total exposure of the cervical part of the RLN was performed during operations on the thyroid gland. An extremely rare anatomical variation of the nerve was encountered during the surgical procedure. Coexistence of both right RLN and non-RLN was observed in one p...
متن کاملThe nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve: anatomic and electrophysiologic algorithm for reliable identification.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) intraoperative monitoring (IONM) provides a new functional dynamic that adds to visual identification of the RLN to optimize its intraoperative management. Intraoperative monitoring has been applied to the initial identification of the RLN. We now apply IONM to the identification of the nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) and provide ele...
متن کاملIncreased and safer detection of nonrecurrent inferior laryngeal nerve after preoperative ultrasonography.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Right nonrecurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRLN) is an anatomical variant reported with a variable prevalence (0.3%-6%). It is associated with some arterial abnormalities (absence of the brachiocephalic trunk and presence of a right aberrant subclavian lusorian artery) that may be identified by preoperative ultrasonography (pUS). NRLN represents a major morbidity risk fa...
